Iran opens FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with loss

TEHRAN, Nov. 25 (MNA) – Iranian basketball players conceded a loss in the face of Iraqi rivals in their first encounter at 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification tournament.

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers for Asia and Oceania is underway in China where 16 teams are seeking World Cup slots.

National Iranian basketball team lost their first debut at the qualifying event against Iraq (66-74) despite having the upper hand in the first and third quarters.

Mehran Hatami’s boys are scheduled to take up the Qatari outfit in their second match to be held on Monday.

Iran has been seeded in Group D of Asian Qualifiers against Iraq, Qatar and Kazakhstan.

The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the 18th tournament of the FIBA Basketball World Cup for men's national basketball teams.

The tournament will be hosted in China and it will mark a new era for the competition as described. Rescheduled from 2018 to 2019, this edition will be the first FIBA Basketball World Cup since 1967 that will not occur in the same year as the FIFA World Cup, but a year following the latter.
