Ghasemi snatches gold at OG world qualifiers

TEHRAN, Apr. 23 (MNA) – Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Amir Ghasemi Monjazi won the title at 130kg category of the 1st OG World Qualification Tournament in Mongolia.

Iran’s heavy weight Greco-Roman wrestler Amir Ghasem Monjazi managed to win the gold medal at 2016 Olympic Games (OG) World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 1 in Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia securing a place at Rio Olympics.

Former junior Asia champion Ghasemi had to face the Chinese wrestler Qiang Meng in the final round while he was awarded the gold medal since his rival had pulled out of the tournament due to injury.

Amir Ghasemi had subdued Luciano Del Rio of Argentina 4-0 by technical fall in the first round before he gained a 2-0 victory over Hungary’s Balint Lam.

In his third encounter, the Iranian wrestler downed Uzbekistan’s Muminjon Abdullaev with technical fall and marched to the final round with a 2-0 win against Ioseb Chugosshvili of Belarus.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Hamid Sourian at 59kg weight category overcame the Romanian Greco-Roman Wrestler Roman Amoyan 7-4 in the first round while he conceted a 4-9 defeat against Bulgaria’s Ivo Serafimov Angelov.

Later in the tournament, Hamid Sourian failed to overcome the South Korean rival missing an Olympic berth at the first “Last-Chance” qualifier.

Sourian will attend the 2nd World Qualification Tournament to be held from May 6–8, 2016 in Turkey’s Istanbul in his final attempt to book berths in 2016 Rio Olympics.
