City Council appoints Pirouz Hanachi as Tehran mayor

TEHRAN, Nov. 13 (MNA) – Members of Tehran City Council have appointed Pirouz Hanachi as the new mayor, following Mohammad Ali Afshani's forced resignation due to a newly adopted law banning the retired to be employed once again.

During the regular meeting held by the Tehran City Council on Tuesday, Nov. 13, Pirouz Hanachi, deputy mayor for urban development and architecture, was appointed as the new mayor with 11 votes in favor.

His main competitor, Abbas Akhoundi, former Minister of Transport and Urban Management, obtained 10 votes of the Council members.

Born in 1964, Pirouz Hanachi held the position as deputy mayor for technical and development at the municipality during Najafi’s term as Tehran’s mayor. He was appointed as deputy mayor for urban development and architecture when Mohammad Ali Afshani took Najfi’s place at the municipality.

Afshani was forced to resgin after a new law came into effect, banning the retired to be employed once again.

Hanachi had been the secretary of the High Council for urban development and architecture, as well as the deputy mayor for urban development and architecture during President Rouhani’s first term in office.

Hanachi holds a Ph.D in urban restoration and revitalization of historical cities at University of Tehran.

After the appointment of a mayor by City Council members, the Interior Ministry needs to approve the appointment.
