The five-day exercise in the world’s largest lake has been unprecedented in terms of some techniques and the use of newest warships, missile systems and commando units. Most notable was the appearance of fully-domestically built Damavand destroyer in a drill of such massive scale and importance for the first time since its deployment at Navy’s northern fleet.
Damavand is Iran’s second domestically manufactured destroyer after ‘Jamaran’ currently deployed on southern waters of the country. Damavand came into operation on the Caspian Sea to significantly improve Iranian Navy’s capabilities and preparedness.
After a number of voyages and docking at several Caspian Sea littoral states, Damavand took part in Sustainable Security naval drill and succeeded in carrying out all of its designated missions as the leading warship alongside Peikan-class missile carriers, Ghaem-class gunboats, and offensive speedboats.
The drill, covering an area of 80,000 square kilometers, made use of various electronic and optic systems, shore-to-sea missile systems, surveillance and intelligence systems, electronic warfare systems, sea drones, fixed wing aircraft, commando units, marine rescue teams, etc.
