Zarif hails Iraqis for successful Arbaeen ceremony   

TEHRAN, Dec. 04 (MNA) – In a message addressing Iraqi nation and officials, Iran’s FM Zarif appreciated Iraqis for the safe and secure running of the 26-million-attendant event.     

After the secure and successful ceremony of Arbaeen walking and mourning rituals in Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala where 26 million pilgrims, according to Iraqi minister of transport, converged on Thursday, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif issued a message of appreciation and congratulation.

The Iranian chief diplomat, in his message, described the event as the true application of unity of all truth-seekers of the world in quest for justice, fight with oppression and extremism, and counter to deviation in values.

"I feel obliged to thank all officials, government, and relentless nation of Iraq for the hospitality and generosity kindly offered to millions of Iranian pilgrims," highlighted Zarif in his message.

He also paid respect to all the senior clerics of the Arab country for providing guidance for successful running of the ceremony.

Iraqi Minister of Transport Baqir Jabr al-Zubeidi announced on Wednesday that the number of pilgrims attending the Arbaeen ceremony in Karbala city of Iraq had passed 26 million and predicted that the number would reach 27 million by Thursday.     

Pilgrims from over 60 countries marched all the way to Karbala from cities like Najaf and Baghdad in a show of devotion to the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein, who was brutally martyred along with his 72 companions on teh Day of Ashura on October 10, 680.
