Iran Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholamhossein Dehghani defined Iran’s position in regard to the global issue of narcotics at the third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
While referring to the high number of killed and wounded Iranian police force in the fight against drug traffickers, the Iranian top diplomat described the drug dealers as criminals that have the blood of Iran’s police and armed forces on their hands.
Dehghani noted the rate of drug confiscation in Iran which is the highest in the world, and leveled harsh criticism at the skyrocketing poppy cultivation and opium production in Afghanistan as well as the indifference of the international community toward this global issue and their failure to help the transit countries in the fight against drug trafficking.
Elsewhere in his speech, the Iranian UN deputy envoy drew attention to how drug trafficking funds terrorist groups, warning against the consequences of this issue for the whole international community.
Deputy Secretary General of Iran's Drug Fight Headquarters eariler this April said 553 tons of different types of illicit drugs were confiscated in Iran last year.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the Islamic Republic is netting eight times more opium and three times more heroin than all other countries in the world combined.
The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers and wounded 12,000 others over the past three decades.
