The Iranian top law-maker Ali Larijani, at the head of a parliamentary delegation, arrived, on Sunday afternoon, in Russian capital city of Moscow where he is slated to attend the international conference dubbed 'Parliamentary Members vs. Drugs' slated for December 4 in the Russian capital.
Upon arrival at Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow, Mr. Larijani was welcomed by Russian State Duma Vice-Speaker Neverov.
The Iranian top legislator left Tehran earlier at noon accompanied by a delegation comprising of a number of Iranian lawmakers for this two-day visit. Delivering a speech at the conference and holding talks with a number of participating officials are on Larijani’s agenda.
According to Neverov, MPs from 44 countries will attend the event, which comprises a plenary conference meeting in the course of the morning, at which State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, the heads of the member states’ parliaments and the chairmen of relevant committees will speak. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, and Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova will also attend the conference.
The conference will be followed in three sections in the afternoon. The first one will be devoted to the improvement of anti-drug laws and the second, to drug addiction and modern approaches to rehabilitation, while the third section will focus on the role of non-profit organizations in the war on drugs, according to TASS.
The Moscow Declaration of Inter-Parliamentary Anti-Drug Cooperation is also expected to be signed at the conference.
On the sidelines of the event, the Inter-Parliamentary Committee of Iran and Russia will also hold discussion on topics of mutual interest.
Before leaving Tehran for Moscow, Mr. Larijani told the reporters at Mehrabad Airport that “the main purpose of this trip is to attend anti-drug conference of parliaments in Moscow, and I will hold an important meeting with Russian officials there on the sidelines of the conference.”
Pointing to the fact that the issue of illegal drugs is an important concern of both the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia, Larijani added that the production of narcotics in Afghanistan has increased in the past years, despite NATO's claims, adding that it seems they are either indifferent to the problem or are helping the traffickers secretly.
