Abyar’s ‘Breath’ selected as Iran 2018 Oscar entry

TEHRAN, Sep. 19 (MNA) – Narges Abyar’s Iran-Iraq war drama ‘Breath’ has been selected as Iran’s Foreign Language Academy Award entry for 2018.

‘Breath’ premiered at the 34th Fajr International Film Festival in February 2016 and won the Best Supporting Actress for Shabnam Moghaddami.

Adapted by director Narges Abyar from her own novel, ‘Breath’ delves into a child's fantasy world and moments from her life which has been thrown into turmoil against the backdrop of a war Iraq waged against Iran in 1980.

Narges Abyar has won two Best Directior awards for ‘Breath’ at 12th Vancouver International Women In Film Festival in Canada and 2016 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

In the span of 23 years that Iran has been regularly submitting films to the Foreign Language category of the Academy Awards, the contemporary cinema of Iran has managed to receive three nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and one nomination for Best Screenplay. Asghar Farhadi won the country’s two Oscars for ‘A Separation’ in 2012 and ‘The Salesman’ in 2017.

Narges Abyar is best known for directing war drama ‘Track 143’ which has also been adapted from Abyar’s novel titled ‘The Third Eye’. The film won Audience Award for Best Film at annual Reel Sydney Festival of World Cinema in 2015, as well as  the Crystal Simorgh award for Audience Favorite Film at the 32nd Fajr International Film Festival.
