Arab League islands statement ‘unfounded’

TEHRAN, Sep. 11 (MNA) – Foreign Ministry spokesperson has rebuked recent Arab League statement reiterating past territorial claims by UAE on three Persian Gulf islands of Iran.

Bahram Ghasemi told reporters on Sunday that the claims would only derail the peace and mutual cooperation and good-neighborliness in the Persian Gulf. Ghasemi was reacting officially to the closing statement of 146th Arab League foreign ministerial session in Cairo which unanimously and roundly reiterated that three Iranian islands of Abu Musa, Greater and Lesser Tonbs belonged to UAE. Mr. Ghasemi believed the League had displayed historical myopia and ignored the realities the Iranian claims on the three islands rested; “the statement is seen by us as examples of interfering with Iran’s internal affairs and we consider it possible to embark on every legal and conventional acts to protect our territories,” he told the press.

“Such claims would not bear any tangible outcomes to UAE and would only serve widening the gap unnecessarily and gradually carved to the region during past decades; the principled policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to respect neighbors and uphold the spirit of fraternity and strict avoidance of interference in internal affairs of others,” the spokesperson said.
