1,640 ha under mango cultivation in Iran
TEHRAN - According to the latest statistics, mango trees cover some 1,640 hectares of lands in the country.
Iran’s total mango production attains 13,000 tons each year. So, per hectare mango output in Iran is put at 7.9 tons while the world record reaches 10 tons. Mango farming in Iran has a 300-year history. The majority of Iran’s mango is produced in Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchestan and Kerman provinces. Some 1.3 million hectares of lands are used of mango production in the world.
7m arrivals, departures recorded by Iranian customs in 10 months
TEHRAN -– In the past ten months of the current year (Mar. 20, 2004 to Jan. 20, 2005), some 7,364,000 passengers arrived in or departed from Iran’s customs check points, according to a report released by Iran Customs Administration.
The number of arrivals corroborated 11% growth while departures showed a 8.5% increase in comparison with the corresponding period last year. According to the report, Iranian passengers set a number of 2,623,000 of the total arrival records. A total number of 1,057,000 foreign passengers arrived in the Iranian customs too to set a 14% increase.
Mahrabad customs office recorded most of the arrivals in the 10-month period (1,456,000 passengers). Bazargan and Jolfa customs offices stood next recording 456,300 and 278,800 passenger arrivals respectively.
6000 olive saplings planted in Andimeshk
TEHRAN –- Head of Agricultural Jihad Office of Andimeshk, north of Khuzestan Province, said Tuesday that some 6000 olive saplings were planted in the city during the past three months.
“These cover 30 hectares of lands in the tropical farmlands of Andimeshk,” Ozanzadeh implied. The process aimed at supplying the regional markets with olive oil and canned olive tins. “It will also create jobs,” he stated. Currently, olive trees cover some 470 ha of lands in Andimeshk.
Iran’s car battery output hits 1.6m
TEHRAN –- Annually, some 1.6 million car batteries are produced in Iran while the total domestic demand for them is twice.
The industry suffers from a lack of skilled workers and experts. In addition, battery makers do not provide the Ministry of Industries and Mines with proper information of their work since they don’t know enough about the regulations. Private companies have to compete with the only state-owned battery maker, Niroo, and this limits the output of batteries in the country. Therefore, foreign companies such as the Chinese ones achieve this opportunity to enter the Iranian lucrative market.
ICCIM to participate in campaign against smuggling
TEHRAN –- Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines (ICCIM) and the Headquarters to Combat Trafficking of Goods and Hard Currencies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Tuesday to cooperate in fighting against smuggling.
The MoU, including eight articles, was signed by Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, head of the headquarters, and Alinaqi Khamushi who is in charge of the chamber. The agreement mainly aims at paving the ground for fundamental reforms of the economic sector. The text also includes instructions for the campaigns against trafficking of goods and hard currencies as well as the suggestions of how to develop transit sector and to tighten security on roads. Qalibaf had elsewhere said that each year, some $5.5 billion of goods are smuggled into the country.
W. Azerbaijan exports 15m tons of animal products
TEHRAN –- During the nine-month period from March 20 to December 20, 2004), some 15.2 million tons of animal products were exported from West Azerbaijan Province.
Thanking to its exceptional geographical location, the northwestern province has turned into a transit hub, especially for animal and unprocessed animal products. Meanwhile, some 53 ostriches, 3000 sheep intestines, 22,500kg horse food, 21,214 kg of honey, 49,165 kg of crabs from Turkey and Azerbaijan Republic were imported to the province.
Government owes Rls.2000b to farmers
TEHRAN –-Iranian government owes Rls.2000 billion in total to the farmers, said Mohammad Hossein Shariatmadar, deputy farming director in the Agricultural Jihad Ministry.
The farmers of sugar beets are the major people to whom the government owes 1300 billion rials, Shariatmadar said. He also pointed to the high average consumption of wheat in the country, saying that “Self-sufficiency in wheat production needs strenuous efforts as well as the full support of the
government.”
