Road construction threatening historical city of Darzin in central Iran

TEHRAN, Jan. 21 (MNA) -- A part of the historical city of Darzin will be destroyed by the Bam-Kerman highway, which is to pass to the north of the city.

Containing ruins of Sassanid and Islamic structures, Darzin is among the historical sites of the city of Bam, which has previously been registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the Persian service of CHN reported on Tuesday.

“The splendor of the city continued until the mid centuries of the Islamic era in Iran,” said Shahram Zare’, who is the director of a team tasked to demarcate the city.

“There are at least three intact mud-brick castles depicting the transition of techniques and style of the Sassanid architecture to the periods that came afterwards,” Zare’ added.

The project officials previously rejected a proposal to relocate the highway in their plan. They argued that the modification would cost too much.

The project will not be carried out after a rescue excavation is done at the site, Zare’ said.

“The project officials should provide the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization with the necessary funds for the rescue excavation,” he noted.

Darzin is located 20 kilometers west of the city of Bam, in Kerman Province.
