10 Million Basijis Prepared to Defend Iran: IRGC Commander

TEHRAN, June 25 (Mehr News Agency) – The Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Rahim Safavi, said here on Wednesday that 10 million Basijis (volunteer forces) stand ready to protect Iran's security.

Safavi, addressing a meeting of IRGC engineers, pledged that Basijis would struggle to thwart any threats against Iran's security "from inside and outside."

He also stressed that Iran would never welcome war and that the policy of Iran has always been the strategy of detente.

"Today's complicated and rapid regional and international developments and the movements of enemy elements inside Iran have gradually increased the weight of the responsibility of the guardians of the revolution in safeguarding the national and religious dignity of Islamic Iran," Safavi said.

"It is necessary that [the guardians of the revolution] adopt their positions according to the dictates of the time."

Elsewhere in his remarks, the IRGC commander said that Revolutionary Guards should develop their abilities and expertise in various fields so as to better protect the ideals of the founder of the Islamic Revolution, the late Imam Khomeini, in order to meet the needs of the day.
