Cadet freestylers finish 4th in Athens

TEHRAN, Sep. 11 (MNA) – Iran’s freestyle squad collected one gold, one silver and three bronze medals to occupy the fourth position at the 2017 World Cadet Wrestling Championships in the Greek capital.

Freestyle competitions of the sportive event were competed from September 8 to 10 in Ano Liosia Olympic Hall of Athens where Iranian contestants presented awe-inspiring athletic skills and managed to win a total of five colorful medals.

Accordingly, competing in 54-kilogram weight category, Mehdi Eshghi clinched Iran’s only freestyle gold medal. Moreover, Abbas Foroutan settled for silver in 85kg division while Mohammad Nokhodi (69kg), Meysam Zareh (76kg) as well as Seyed Mehdi Hashemi (100kg) all stood on the third podium.

The Iranian outfit, having bagged a total of 53 points, landed fourth overall in the final standing table. The achievement marked a significant improvement as Persians had finished eighths in the previous edition of the tournament held in Georgia where they only received one gold and two silver medals.

Russia stood on top of the podium with 73 points followed by the US (66 points) and Azerbaijan (61 points). The fourth to tenth positions were occupied by Iran, Japan, India, Turkey, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

Competitions kicked off on September 04 on three United World Wrestling (UWW) homologated mats and will wrap up today on September 10.
