Voting extended for last time until midnight

TEHRAN, May 19 (MNA) – Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli announced election is extended until midnight which is the latest possible time.

Polls open in Iran for presidential and city council elections on Friday morning. Follow the live coverage here.

With official announcement of Interior Minister Rahmani Fazli, polls open in Iran for presidential and city council elections. Iranians, in addition to electing the president, will vote for the candidates of City and Village Councils, too. The Iranian nation will choose among 4 candidates, Seyed Mostafa Mir Salim, Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi, Seyed Mostafa Hashemitaba and the incumbent President Hassan Rouhani.

Leader casts his vote

Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei cast his ballots in both elections in early minutes of elections. 

President Rouhani casts his vote

Iranian incumbent President and presidential candidate Hassan Rouhani attended the Hosseinieh Ershad and cast his ballot on early hours of elections.

First official attends elections

Mohammad Reza Aref, a moderate reformist who leads the Hope faction in Parliament, attended Jamaran Hosseinieh and voted for his candidate.

2nd candidate votes

Seyed Mostafa Hashemitaba cast his ballot in a school in Shahid Araghi Street.

Officials cast their ballots

First Vice President Es'hagh Jahangiri also participated in Hosseinieh Ershad with his wife and cast his vote.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif went to the polls in the morning and voted for his preferred candidate.

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan cast his ballot in Hosseinieh Ershad.

Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani registered his ballot too. Ali Larijani, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament also cast his vote in Qom, the constituency he represents in Parliament. 

IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari cast his vote in Qoba Mosque in Tehran. 

Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Imam Khomeini, who is the custodian of Imam Khomeini’s shrine in the southern outskirts of Tehran, was among the figures who cast their votes at Jamaran Hosseinieh.

The Guardian Council Chairman Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati cast his vote at the polling station located at the headquarters of the Guardian Council in Tehran.

3rd candidate votes

Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi attended a polling station and cast his ballot in Ershad Mosque in Ray City.

4th candidate casts his ballot

Mostafa Mir Salim was the last candidate who registered his vote on Friday in Qoba Mosque of Tehran.

High turnout in presidential vote so far

Farhad Tajari, the Spokesman of the Central Supervisory Delegation of the Election, told the media that till 04:00 p.m. local time some 20 million of Iranians have cast their votes for both elections.

Voting time extended

With official announcement of Interior Minister Rahmani Fazli voting hours were extended till 8 p.m.

Larijani visits Elections HQ

Speaker of Parliament Ali Larijani paid visit to Elections Headquarters in Interior Ministry where he met with officials and hailed massive turnout in the elections. 

Voting time extended again

Authorities have announced that due to huge participation of people and long lines at polling stations, voting time is extended for two more hours until 2200 hours.

Polls to close at midnight 

Minister of Interiro Affairs Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli who was speaking to IRIB news in a live interview apologized from the nation for inconveniences and lack of order in polling stations and announced that voting will continue until midnigth. According to the law, it is the latest possible time to extend the elections.
