The international event, entitled ‘21st outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial’ kicked off on March 03 in the city of Kiev and will come to an end today.
In the first-day competitions, Iranian representatives managed to win two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Competing in 75-kilogram weight group, Iranian freestyler Reza Atri faced a defeat against the host country rival in the semifinal round two he had turned out victorious in his two opening encounters. He later overcame an Azerbaijani wrester to stand on the third podium.
Reza Afzali however struck an off draw in the first round of 74kg division before thrashing a host county rival 10-0 by technical fall en route to semifinals. In order to secure a place in the finals debut, the Iranian freestyler had to breeze past the American contestant. Afzali snatched the gold medal after pulling out an 8-0 victory over a Belarusian rival.
Iran’s Hossein Shahbazi also suffered a 1-4 defeat in the semifinals of 97kg freestyle weight category though he later scooped the country’s second medal by quelling a German wrestler 4-3.
Moreover, in Greco-Roman section, Iran’s Shirzad Beheshtitala secured three consecutive victories on road to the finals where he failed to get the better of a host country wrestler and ranked second overall.
Iran’s second medal trophy was obtained by Farshad Belfakeh who performed eye-catching athletic performances in all rounds against four rivals from Ukraine and Georgia in 71kg weight division.
