Tehran to host FIBA Asia U18 C’ship

TEHRAN, Jul. 20 (MNA) – The 24th edition of FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship will kick off in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Friday July 22.

The event will mark the 24th edition of the Asian Championship for Junior Men ages 18 years old and below.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Tehran, Iran on July 22-31, 2016 with attendance of national teams from Iran, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Lebanon, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, India, Iraq and Thailand.

Iran's squad is looking forward to securing a medal since only the top three teams will qualify and will represent FIBA Asia the 2017 FIBA Under-19 World Championship in Egypt.

The 2016 edition marks the second time Tehran will host the tournament after successfully staging the 20th edition eight years ago.

According to the FIBA Asia rules, the number of participating teams in the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship is sixteen. Each of the six FIBA Asia Sub-Zones had two places, and the hosts (Iran) and title holders (China) were automatically qualified. The other four places are allocated to the zones according to performance in the 2014 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship.

Only 12 teams have registered to participate in this tournament. No team from the Persian Gulf region entered despite being allocated two automatic berths.

Iranian basketball players have been seeded in Group B of the sportive extravaganza against South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Lebanon while Group A comprises China, Taiwan, the Philippines, India, Iraq as well as Thailand.

This year's tournament will be held at Azadi Sport Complex in Tehran.
