Defense min. due in Moscow on Mon.

TEHRAN, Feb. 14 (MNA) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan will be off to Russia on Monday at the invitation of his host Sergey Shoigu.

During the visit, Defense Minister Dehghan will hold discussions with senior Russian political and defense officials, including his counterpart Sergey Shoigu, on bilateral, regional and international issues.

The major objective of Dehghan’s visit to Russia has been stated as to develop and promote defense, military and technological cooperation between the two countries.

Dehghan’s visit will come days after Ali Akbar Velayati, Leader's senior adviser on international affairs, announced that Iran plans to boost defense cooperation with Russia and buy more weaponry from Moscow.

Velayati, who visited Russia early February to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues with Russian senior officials, had also met with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, in addition to Russia's Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had made a rare visit to Iran in January 2015, after 15 years. During the visit, the two counterparts promised "accelerated" military cooperation between the two countries and signed an agreement on defense cooperation, which called for joint exercises, port visits by naval vessels, and a joint fight against piracy in the Caspian.
