Malaysia ready to guarantee security for ASEAN summit

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 16 (MNA) – Malaysia has reinforced security with intelligence services prior to the 27th Summit of the Association of South-Eastern Asian Nations (ASEAN), to be held in this capital next week, official sources announced.

Following the terrorist attacks in Paris, where more than 100 people were killed and over 300 were injured, Minister of Interior Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told the local newspaper that they are not only getting ready, but also increasing the number of the security personnel.

The Interior minister said that apart from increasing the number of security agents to be deployed in the police operation, authorities are tightening surveillance with intelligence services.

In early November, eight Malaysian citizens suspected of having links with the ISIL were arrested.

Previously, ten people were detained for the same reason on August 20, including six members of the security forces, according to the general inspector of that institution, Khalid Abu Bakar, who added that the detainees were planning attacks, collecting funds for the ISIL and recruiting militiamen.

The suspects, who were over 100 last year, were arrested after an operation launched by the antiterrorist police unit in the capital and five states.

According to the program, the ASEAN top authorities' meeting will be held on November 18 and other conferences will take place until November 20, while the 27th ASEAN summit is scheduled for November 21 and 22 in this capital's Conference Center.
