14 arrested in 100-million euro corruption case

BANDAR ABBAS, Hormozgan Province, May 4 (MNA) – State Inspectorate Organization (ISO) director Mostafa Pourmohammadi announced on Friday that 14 people had been arrested in connection with the 100 million-euro corruption case who are now free on bail.

The SIO said on Monday that a new incident of banking corruption had been uncovered in the coastal province of Hormozgan. It said 100 million euros had been loaned to a private company by a state bank without ensuring the necessary collateral was put in place.

Pourmohammadi said Bank Melli director Mahmoud Reza Khavari who fled to Canada when the 2.6 billion dollar fraud case surfaced in September last year is one of the people who allowed the loans to be issued.

Pourmohammadi said 80 million euros of the loan, which had been transferred out of the country, had been confiscated. For the remainder, he added, collateral has been received.
