TEHRAN, April 15 (MNA) -- An annual ritual, the mausoleum of the Persian classical poet Farid ud-Din Attar (c. 1145-1221) in Neyshabur was adorned with flowers during a ceremony on April 14.

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance Seyyed Mohammad Hossseini, the deputy minister of culture for poetry and literature Yahya Talebian and Khorasan Razavi province officials attended the ceremony which was held on the occasion of Attar National Day.

At the ceremony, Talbeian spoke on Attar saying that commemorating Persian literati is the commemoration of Iranian culture.

He called literature a manifestation of love from various aspects that include love of mankind, love of heaven and all humanistic values.

Khorasan Razavi Deputy Governor for Political and Social Affairs Mohammad Ghaffari also spoke on Attar calling him a manifestation of “national identity”.

Asrar-Nama, Mantiq at-Tayr (Conference of the Birds), Mosibat-Nama, Elahi-Nama, Mokhtar-Nama, Khosrow-Nama, and Tadkerat al-Awliya are among Attar’s masterpieces.

Attar’s most famous work “The Conference of the Birds” is an allegorical poem describing the quest of the birds, which symbolically represent Sufis, for the mythical Simorgh, or Phoenix.

Finally thirty birds that have survived the journey realize that they and the Simorgh are one, a clever play on the words Simorgh -- a mystical bird in Iranian mythology -- and “si morgh” -- meaning “thirty birds” in Persian.
