UNSC holds emergency meeting after US abduction of Maduro

TEHRAN, Jan. 05 (MNA) – The UN Security Council (UNSC) kicked off an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the United States’ military attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its President Nicolás Maduro.

The meeting started with a speech by the Somalian representative and rotating president of the UN Security Council.

Earlier, Russia's UN Envoy Vassily Nebenzia had previously announced that the UN Security Council would meet on Monday to discuss the US aggression of Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro.

The news came hours after Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto, in response to the US aggression, sent an official letter to the United Nations requesting an urgent meeting of the Security Council, calling the action an aggression against its sovereignty and national security.

The emergency session was requested by Venezuela and Colombia, with Russia and China—both permanent members of the Security Council—also supporting the call for the meeting.

In a letter sent to the Security Council on Saturday, Venezuela’s Ambassador to the UN Samuel Reinaldo Moncada Acosta condemned the US attack and urged the council to take immediate action to halt Washington’s measures. The envoy warned that, in light of the attacks, Venezuela reserves its “inherent right of self-defense” under international law.
