“We are committed to appreciate and value the vigilance and unity of the second Tehran City Council” for choosing a competent and considerate mayor for the city who has won the approval of the people, the MPs said in the statement.
After Mahmud Ahmadinejad elected president as Tehran mayor the Tehran councilors elected Qalibaf as mayor. A former police chief Qalibaf himself ran for president and came fourth in the race.
MP Alireza Zakani said now Qalibaf has two-year experience in managing Tehran and he has proven that he has great and practical plans for the capital.
“As the representative of Tehran’s people in the Majlis, I favor the current mayor and I think Qalibaf is the best choice for managing the city,” he told the Mehr News Agency.
In the third city council election last year which was held simultaneously with the Assembly of Experts elections the conservatives still hold the majority of the seats in the council. The reformist hold about a third of the council seats.
As the new council begins its work, there is widespread speculation about who they will choose as the new mayor. However, it seems that the current mayor will be reelected since he has a good record and is regarded as a pragmatist who relies on the expertise of technocrats.
MP Abbas-Ali Akhtari told the MNA that confirming Qalibaf as the mayor would benefit both the citizens and the capital.
His performance has been satisfactory, he has taken major steps for developing Tehran, and “every impartial person would approve it,” he added.
“I am against removing Qalibaf from Tehran’s municipality,” MP Mehdi Kuchakzadeh stated.
The management of the metropolis of Tehran cannot undergo repeated changes because this will have many negative consequences, he noted.
