Iran’s Firouzja wins gold at World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad

TEHRAN, Dec. 03 (MNA) – The 2018 World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad wrapped up on Sun., with Iran claiming the fifth place and Iranian chess grandmaster Alireza Firouzja picked as the best player in the tournament.

The World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad 2018 was organized by Turkish Chess Federation (TCF), held in the Turkish city of Konya from November 25 to December 2.

The Iranian outfit took part in nine rounds of competition, winning six of them against Romania, Slovakia, China, Serbia, Belarus and the United States, and conceding defeat in the other three rounds against Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and India .

Uzbekistan won the championship, followed by India, China, Belarus, and Iran in the second to fifth place, respectively.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Iranian chess grandmaster Alirez Firouzja was picked as the best player of the tournament and received a gold medal by gaining 8 points from particpating in 9 rounds, and a performance rating of 2736.

Firouzja won the Iranian Chess Championship at age 12 and earned his grandmaster title at the age of 14. He is currently the No. 3 ranked Iranian player after Parham Maghsoodloo and Pouya Idani.
