Internally displaced Syrians to return home: Zarif’s aide

TEHRAN, Aug. 01 (MNA) – Hossein Jaberi Ansari, Iran’s top negotiator at Syrian talks, said Tue. that the internally displaced people of Syria will begin to return home under an agreement reached at the end of the 10th high-level meeting of the guarantor states for a nationwide ceasefire in Syria.

Speaking to IRNA on Tue. after the high-level meeting held in Russian city of Sochi, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, senior aide to Iranian foreign minister, said the issue on the return of Syria’s internally displaced people (IDPs) to their homeland was one of the key topics of discussion at this round of talks as it was raised for the very first time in all the ten rounds of talks on a nationwide ceasefire in Syria.

“The victories of the Syrian Army on the battleground have made it possible to discuss the return of the refugees now,” he said, voicing hope that the case would be facilitated through the future Syrian peace talks and international cooperation.

Jaberi Ansari then noted to a quadrilateral meeting held between representatives of the three guarantor sates and UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, saying the talks focused on the formation of Syrian constitutional commission.

“We agreed to continue our consultations in a new round of talks in Geneva, and we are hoping that the talks will pave the way for the start of activities of the of Syrian constitutional commission,” he added.

The Iranian senior negotiator at Syrian peace talks further maintained that the three guarantor states discussed the issue of the exchange of the killed and the missing, and have formed a committee to follow up on the case. He added that delegations from United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross will take part in the meetings to offer consultations.

The 10th high-level meeting of the guarantor states for a nationwide ceasefire in Syria was held in the Russian city of Sochi on 30-31 July, and concluded with a joint statement that reaffirmed the countries’ support for Syria’s sovereignty.
