Spokesperson of Iran’s Foreign Ministry Bahram Ghasemi said America’s departure from Paris Agreement shows a lack of responsibility towards the international community and will lead to increased isolation of the US government.
He described climate change has created huge global challenges dealing with unpleasant consequences of which requires full and honest participation of all countries, particularly industrialized states.
“These changes will leave devastating impacts on developing countries, especially in West Asia,” highlighted the official enumerating a number of these adverse consequences including increased seasonal overheating, widespread socio-economic harms in addition to drought, dust storms, rise of emerging diseases, population displacement and migration.
Ghasemi said failure to adhere to obligations of Paris Agreement by a government who is the second-largest greenhouse gases and one of the most pollutant countries in the world, is unacceptable and will be condemned.
He urged the international community to force the new US government to fulfill its international obligations; “Preventing harm to global agreements like the Paris accord, which has turned into a symbol of global partnership and strengthening multilateralism, is essential and the international community should seriously hinder its weakening.”
The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that irresponsibly withdrawal of America, as one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world, will not remove the historical responsibility of Americans towards climate changes caused by greenhouse gas emissions, he concluded.
