The Iranian outfit, who is preparing for World Taekwondo Championships 2017, will take part at World Taekwondo President's Cup due to run from April 27 to 30 at the Ano Liosia Olympic Indoor Hall in the Greek capital, which played host to judo and wrestling at the 2004 Olympic Games.
Despite the fact the 28th Fajr Open will be held in Sari Venue on 16-17 April 2017 only a few days prior to the Greece event, the Persians have decided to put their athletic abilities into the crucible by participating at an international event, said Mahdi Bibak, head coach of the Iranian team.
“World and Olympic champions will be present at WTF President's Cup in Greece which provides an excellent benchmark for Iranian taekwondo fighters,” he continued.
Around 1,500 athletes could compete at the World Taekwondo President's Cup, where qualification for the European Championships will also be on offer.
Action in Athens will feature both kuorugi and poomsae competitions.
Athletes will compete in 28 weight categories across three age divisions, senior, junior and cadet.
The tournament will operate a single elimination system according to World Taekwondo Federation rules, with individual matches consisting of three two minute rounds with a one minute break between each.
Also, the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships will take place from June 24 to June 30, 2017, in South Korea in Muju’s dedicated taekwondo facility, Taekwondowon. The organizers expect more than 160 nations and 2,000 athletes to participate.
