Mr. Ali Akbar Velayati and Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis met on Wednesday after which Mr. Velayati told reporters that Iran would not agree that the US and some Arab reactionary regimes be present in the Astana meeting; “there has been stories about the US officials demanding that they be present as an observer; however, we believe they would actively participate despite their observer status, thus we actively oppose their participation; neither Saudi Arabia and Qatar should participate, since they had been the major contributors to the devastation and deaths of thousands of civilians in Syria,” he told the press.
On Iran’s position on Turkey, Velayati added that Russian colleagues had received from Turkish side that they would definitely persuade the opposition fighters to remain committed to the ceasefire plan; “for their long and constructive roles, Iran and Russia should have the priority to address the situation in Syria, to which Turkey should contribute to bring stability to the country,” he concluded.
