Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif made the remarks at a meeting in Tokyo with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida.
Iran’s Zarif, while appreciating hospitality of Japanese government and people, voiced satisfaction about leading a political, economic and cultural delegation to the East Asian country.
The senior Iranian official recalled that primary goal of the Iranian delegation in their visit to Tokyo was to attend the 2016 Iran-Japan Business Forum which was organized on Wednesday morning in patronage of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO); “we are eager to reinvigorate and bolster multilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, economic ones in particular.”
He deemed Iran as an anchor of stability inside the region calling for Japan’s more active role in ensuring regional security by taking advantage of its political ties with other actors.
Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed Iran’s readiness to join hands with Japan in providing the region with stability especially in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf adding that grounds are prepared for trilateral cooperation on economic development.
He recalled the earlier meeting between Iran’s President Rouhani and Prime Minister Abe of Japan in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly asserting “the two sides drafted the ten-year roadmap of economic relations with Japan and we need to spare no effort in implementation of its provisions.”
The official also referred to the constructive role of Japan in implementation of certain articles of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) expressing hope that Tokyo will launch a more active presence in banking and economic relations.
Japan’s FM Fumio Kishida, for his part, emphasized the need for proper implementation of JCPOA affirming his country’s continuous support for the international deal between Iran and the 5+1 group of countries.
He further expected Iran to exploit its influence to promote international peace more than the past by playing a more active role in this regard.
The Japanese foreign minister also announced his country would support stable and reliable implementation of JCPOA.
Following the joint meeting, Iranian and Japanese foreign ministers are slated to expound on outcomes of their negotiations in a gathering of reporters.
