UN urges further cooperation on water issues

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 (MNA) - Senior officials at the UN Security Council urged Tuesday to strengthen international cooperation on water issues, in order to prevent them from leading to conflicts and crises.

In an open debate dedicated to addressing the relation between water and peace, the 15-member body, chaired by Senegal this month, analyzed criteria on the status of the precious resource, which is unevenly distributed in geographic and social terms, with 1.7 billion people without the adequate access to it.
According to the head of the High-level Global Panel on Water and Peace, Slovenian former President Danilo Turk, one of the priorities should be to strengthen cooperation mechanisms in the strategic sector.
Of the 263 rivers that cross or run along more than one border, only 84 of the 145 countries involved have implemented joint management initiatives, some of them ineffective, he warned.
Turk also advocated the availability of increasing the funding for such mechanisms and the support of the United Nations for its advancement and management.
