Petrochimi lands 3rd in FIBA Asia Champions Cup

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (MNA) – Iranian basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam overcame Al-Ahli of the UAE to bag the bronze medal of 2016 FIBA Asia Champions Cup in China.

The bronze medal match of the 25th edition of Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup was held today morning between Iran’s representative Petrochimi Bandar Imam and Al-Ahli of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The event was competed at the Chenzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the south central Chinese city of Chenzhou where the Iranian outfit quelled Arab rivals 100-74 and stood on the third podium.

Petrochimi Bandar Imam, which experienced its first presence at the Asian tournament, had previously beaten Taiwanese and Indian clubs while the conceded a defeat against Al-Riyadi of Lebanon in the preliminary round.

Later in the quarterfinals, Iranian basketball players trounced Al-Shorta of Iraq though they suffered a loss in the hands of China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers in the semifinals on Saturday.

Iranian clubs had always reached finals in earlier editions of the sportive event as Iran had collected five gold and two silver medals prior to the 2016 event.

Al-Shorta of Iraq, Pauian Archiland of Chinese Taipei, Qatar’s Al-Rayyan and Kazakhstan’s Barsy Atyrau finished fifth to eight at 2016 FIBA Asia Champions Cup while the title will be clinched by the winner of an upcoming final showdown between Al-Riyadi of Lebanon and the host country’s China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers.

The FIBA Asia Champions Cup, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions Cup until 2002, is the Asian club championship for professional basketball.

The 25th edition of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup kicked off in Chenzhou, China, on October 8 and will wrap up today on October 16.
