Iran’s kurash wrestler snatches gold in ABG5

TEHRAN, Sep. 26 (MNA) – Iran’s Mohammad Hossein Sheikholeslami has clinched the title of Men’s kurash event at the fifth Asian Beach Games (ABG5).

The Iranian Kurash practitioner overcame Indian rival Gaurav Tokas in the first round of -60kg weight category before defeating his Vietnamese opponent Vo Pham Hoang An in the quarterfinal round. In his final bout, Sheikholeslami had to quell Mongolian Chinbat Otgon in order to stand on top of the podium.

The triumph was achieved by the Iranian representative on Sunday during the continental sportive event which is underway in the south-central Vietnamese city of Da Nang.

The Turkmen national wrestling competition, kurash (also written as goresh), is a kind of wrestling on belts that has ancient roots, and dates back to as early as the 3rd century BC. Wrestlers need to earn points by forcing the opponent to touch the mat with any part of the body except a foot.

Also in Ju-Jitsu discipline, Iran’s Amirhossein Khademian managed to scoop a bronze medal at Men’s minus 69 weight class.

Iran’s tally of medal reached three when Sobhan Taherkhani earned a second bronze medal for the Iranian squad at Men’s long jump of beach athletics.

Beach athletes of Iran are now placed at the ninth position in the overall medal standings table with one gold and two bronze trophies.

The 5th edition of Asian Beach Games opened in Da Nang, Vietnam, on September 24, and will run until October 3.
