Iranian beach wrestlers come first in Asia

TEHRAN, Oct. 02 (MNA) – National Iranian beach wrestling team earned one silver and two gold medals to win the wrestling competition title at the 5th Asian Beach Games.

Competing in Men's under 80kg, Omid Hassantabar of Iran overcame Nairisiga of China in Round of 16 before defeating Ankhbayar Batchuluun of Mongolia in the quarter finals. The Iranian representative later subdued Muhammad Asad Butt of Pakistan in the semifinals and had to get the better of Thailand’s Chanwit Aunjai in the final showdown in order to stand on top of the podium.

Iran’s other gold medalist was Mohammad Naderi who won over Cambodia Makara Nguon in his first encounter of 70kg weight category. He later faced and downed the Mongolian beach wrestler Batzorig Buyanjav on road to the semifinals where he quelled Malek Jan Afzalzada of Afghanistan. Naderi claimed the 70kg title after out powering Pakistan’s Nazir in the final match.

Meanwhile, the Iranian representative at minus 90kg weight division Seyed Mohammad Sadati conceded a defeat to his Paki rival and stood on the second podium. Sadati had previously breezed past contestants from Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Afghanistan and China en route to the final bout.

Accordingly, the Iranian beach wrestling squad won the Asian title with one bronze and two gold medals.

Around 3,500 athletes from 45 Asian Nations are competing in 14 sports in the fifth edition of the Asian Beach Games.

Wrestling competition for the 5th Asian Beach Games 2016 were held in the coastal city of Da Nang in the central Vietnam from September 30th to October 2nd 2016.
