Kish Island to host ICAO Int'l Summit

TEHRAN, May 09 (MNA) – International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) International Summit will be held at Kish Island for three days as of May 9 with the aim of countering organized crimes.

Mohammad Saeid Sharif, Chief Director General of Iran Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), made the remarks saying “the 8th ICAO TRIP Seminar on machine readable travel documents (MRTDs) and traveller identification management will be attended by 50 member countries aiming to confront organized crimes and exchange successful experiences in the field of identity documents.”

“Given the importance of promoting passport security as a momentous international issue, all countries seek to promote the security,” stressed the official noting “ICAP, as a particular entity in the United Nations deals with civil aviation and international travel issues in order to provide a set of flight safety standards.”

Sharifi highlighted that more than 50 states including Canada, Britain and the US will take part in the major event; “numerous Iranian organizations have been involved in organizing the summit.”

“One of the main objectives of Interior Ministry behind holding the event is to confront organized crimes such as human trafficking, terrorism and countering any other threats emanating from forged passenger documents,” he said.

Stressing the need for creating a secure communication with the countries and exercising vigilance and precision, he said that Iran is planning to join Public Key Directory (PKD).

The official pointed out that PKD is a mechanism created by ICAO and participation in it requires signing a memorandum of understanding by the member states.

Iran joining to PKD will help promote security in travels stressed Sharifi commenting “through the method, all the individuals traveling are identifiable at the entrance of the exit of target countries.”

“As trips between countries and continents increases, threats of terrorism, smuggling and organized crimes and money laundering will also grow,” noted the official saying “ignoring the fact will bring about irreparable damage because all horrible events took place across the world are all rooted in forgery of documents and fake identities.”

“We are moving towards biometric identity documents by which individuals are identifiable through their biological characteristics,” he continued.

Sharifi said about ten keynote speakers will give speeches at the opening ceremony asserting “an Iranian producer of machine-readable passports will be introduced on the sidelines of the event.”

“A total of 300 participants from ministries, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), aviation activists as well as relevant domestic and foreign organizations and institutions will attend the summit,” said the official.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a UN specialized agency, established by States in 1944 to manage the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).

ICAO works with the Convention’s 191 Member States and industry groups to reach consensus on international civil aviation Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and policies in support of a safe, efficient, secure, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible civil aviation sector.

The Seminar, hosted by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, will address the ICAO Traveller Identification Programme (ICAO TRIP Strategy), MRTD standards and best practices, document security, identification management and related border security issues.

The ICAO TRIP Seminar will assist member states in implementing ICAO MRTD specifications and related ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). The Seminar will specifically address the needs of States to further enhance the integrity of the passport issuance process and ensure robust identification management in order to maximize border security and facilitation benefits.
