Death toll of Iranians in Mecca at 5

TEHRAN, Sep. 13 (MNA) – Head of Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization has reported on the death of five Iranians and the missing of seven others in the Mecca’s crane crash incident on Friday.

Describing the latest statistics on the casualties of the crane crash incident in Mecca’s Grand Mosque, Saeed Ohadi said that, “until Saturday, we had one casualty but considering the presence of 43 thousand Iranian pilgrims in Mecca, it was found out that four others had passed away in different hospitals to make a total of 5 casualties for our country.”

Stating that 2 of the dead people were Sunnis, Ohadi asserted that “seven other Iranians have not visited their hotels yet but their families have been informed about this incident.”

Announcing the legal tracking of this accident, he said that, currently, investigations on this incident are in progress and the Iranian consulates as well as our ambassador in Riyadh are conducting the legal proceedings in this regard.

“In addition to the pilgrims who died in the recent accident, three male pilgrims have also passed away in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the pilgrimage season this year,” underlined Ohadi.

Elsewhere, the spokesman for the Ministry of Health also explained the status of 10 Iranian pilgrims who are staying in the hospital since the incident took place.

“Four of the injured are staying in the Red Crescent hospital in Mecca and will soon get released,” asserted Iraj Harirchi in an interview adding that 6 other pilgrims need to go through operations before leaving the Saudi Arabian hospitals.

Last Friday, a storm caused the collapse of a tower crane at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, during which at least 107 people died and more than 240 were wounded.
