Iran, Russia call for halt to Yemen war

TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) – Iranian deputy FM and his Russian counterpart discussed the latest developments in the region, especially in Yemen on Friday.

In a telephone talk on Friday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Presidential Envoy for Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov urged an immediate end to Saudi-led military attacks on Yemen prior to negotiations in Geneva.

Both sides emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen and agreed that the upcoming UN-sponsored peace talks between rival Yemeni parties in Geneva would not be influential if Saudi-led aggression on innocent people in Yemen continues.

The Iranian and Russian officials, while supporting UN efforts to establish ceasefire and to send humanitarian aid to Yemen, expressed deep concern over continued killing of defenseless people and the human catastrophe in the war-torn Arab country.

Describing “inadequate” the Geneva talks under the shadow of ongoing military attacks, Amir-Abdollahian and Bogdanov stressed immediate ceasefire as well as taking into consideration the views of all Yemeni groups on the verge of Geneva negotiations.
