The decision was made on a proposal by Judiciary Chief Ayat. Sadeq Amoli Larijani to pardon or commute prison terms of a number of women inmates on the occasions of Lady Fatima Zahra’s birth anniversary, which is marked as Mother’s Day in Iran.
According to Iran's Constitution, the Leader has the authority to pardon or commute prison terms of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.
