Iran denies UAE’s 'baseless' claim over 3 islands

TEHRAN, Mar. 30 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman has emphasized the three islands in Persian Gulf are inseparable parts of Iran.

In reaction to claims made by UAE parliamentary delegation over the three Iranian islands, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said the three Islands of Abu Musa, the Greater and Lesser Tunb, are inseparable parts of Iran.

The remarks by Afkham came after UAE repeated its allegations about ownership of Iran's trio islands in the Persian Gulf in the 26th Arab Summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

“Repeated interferences against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s sovereignty over the three islands of Abu Musa, the Greater and Lesser Tunb have no impact on the existing legal and historical facts,” Afkham reiterated.

Afkham stressed the three Islands are inseparable parts of Iranian territory and all measures taken in the islands has been carried out within the sovereign rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

She underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran always considers the policy of good neighborliness and friendship with all neighboring countries, based on non-interference in internal affairs and mutual respect, as its top political priorities. “Iran allows no limit to expand and deepen friendly relations and welcomes the constructive and extensive cooperation,” Afkham concluded.

UAE has repeatedly claimed Iranian three islands of Abu Musa, the Greater and Lesser Tunb belong to the United Arab Emirates, a baseless claim which has been denied and rejected by Iranian officials. International documents clearly show that the three islands which were historically owned by Iran, temporarily fell to British control in 1903. The islands were returned to Iran based on an agreement in 1971. Some analysts argue that UAE uses the cliam as means of irritating Iran in partiuclar situations and the latest claims come as the Iran, 5+1 talks are about to bear fruit and Arab states are apparently against a final agreement between Iran and the Sextet.
