Fifth Tehran Contemporary Sculpture Biennial kicks off

TEHRAN, Nov. 21 (MNA) -- The fifth Tehran Contemporary Sculpture Biennial opened on November 21 at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.

At a press conference held on Tuesday at the museum, biennial secretary Taher Sheikholhokamaii said that over 300 sculptors submitted works to the secretariat and 103 artists were selected to display their creations, some of whom are members of the Association of Iranian Sculptors.

Over 1000 sculptures are currently on display, he added.

The oldest participant is 85 and the youngest is 18, Sheikholhokamaii pointed out.

This year’s biennial focuses on the central theme of “Peace, Life, and the Future Horizon”, he said, adding that international art critic Robert C. Morgan and Korean artist Chong Son are among the foreign jury members. The Iranian jury members are Behruz Darash, Hamid Rezaii, and Saeid Shahlapur.

At the press conference, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art curator Habibollah Sadeqi announced that an exposition will be held in the near future in which works by Iranian sculptors will be put on sale.

Iranian jury member Behruz Darash also announced that after discussions with Robert Morgan, it was decided that a selection of works from the Tehran biennial would later be exhibited in New York.

The Iranian Academy of Arts, the Art Department of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art are cosponsors of the event.
