Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, outlined five key points in a post on social media regarding the Europeans' move to trigger the snapback mechanism and reinstate terminated UN Security Council sanctions.
Ghalibaf stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran considers the activation of the snapback mechanism and the return of sanctions resolutions as illegal. He underlined that since Russia and China—two permanent members of the Security Council—have publicly declared the move unlawful, no country is obliged to comply with such resolutions.
Accordingly, he added, Iran does not consider itself bound to implement these “illegal” resolutions, including any suspension of uranium enrichment, emphasizing that Tehran’s right to enrichment remains recognized under international law.
The Speaker further noted that the sanctions listed in the resolutions carry little weight compared to the US sanctions already imposed. Moreover, he argued, due to their illegality and the explicit opposition of Russia and China, efforts to enforce these resolutions at the UN face serious legal obstacles.
Ghalibaf also warned that if any country takes action against Iran under these “illegal resolutions,” Tehran will respond with serious reciprocal measures. He stressed that the three European countries behind the move would also face Iran’s firm reaction.
Ghalibaf underlined that the European trio’s insistence on pursuing the illegal snapback mechanism, despite Iran’s demonstrated flexibility, reveals two key realities.
First, he said, negotiations for Western powers are nothing more than a deceptive means to intensify pressure aimed at dismantling Iran’s missile capabilities.
He pointed out that the West tied a six-month extension of snapback to negotiations with the United States and expanded access for the IAEA, while Washington set limits on Iran’s missile range as a precondition.
“Is this not a deliberate and coordinated scheme, disguised under a deceptive façade, designed to strip Iran of its missile power and weaken its defense capabilities?” he asked.
Second, Ghalibaf stressed, the move once again highlighted that the sole guarantor of Iran’s national security and interests is the country’s own strength.
