"Presence in Iran to offer condolences necessary"

TEHRAN, May 22 (MNA) – The Egyptian foreign minister told the acting foreign minister َAli Bagheri Kani Wednesday that he wished he could have been in Iran for a different and better occasion rather than attending a funeral.

On a visit to Tehran to take part at President Ebrahim Raeisi and his companions' funeral on Wednesday, the Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Hassan Shoukry met with acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri Kani.

"I wished I would have come to Iran in a better opportunity and situation, but it was necessary to be here to express my condolences to the government and people of Iran," Shoukry said in the meeting after saying that he had very good and cordial relations with late Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Adbollahian.

The Egypt's top diplomat pointed to his intensive and continuous negotiations with Amir-Abdollahian regarding regional issues, and emphasized the necessity of continuing those negotiations and consultations in order to promote and develop relations based on stable foundations and principles.

Bagheri Kani, for his part, thanks for the message of condolence and the visit and pointed to the existence of cultural, historical and religious similarities between the two great countries with ancient history and civilization, and emphasized the continuation of the approach and policy of late Raeisi and Amir-Abdollahian in pursuing the deepening and promotion of relations with major Islamic countries, especially Egypt.

The interim foreign minister also expressed hope for negotiations which the foreign ministers of the two countries started with special attention to the interests of the two countries and the nations to be pursued seriously to achieve results desired by the heads of the two countries.
