Iranian Illustrator Grabs Bratislava's Golden Plaque

TEHRAN, Sept.13 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iranian Children's books illustrator Hafez Mir-Aftabi scooped up the Golden Plaque of the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava 2003 for his illustrations in "Elijah" written by Mostafa Rahmandoust.

The biennial is held every two year in September and October at the House of Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Iku Dekune, a Japanese illustrator, won Grand Prix, the top prize of the biennial.

Golden Plaque is the third prize of the biennial which is given to five competitors. The other winners of the prize were illustrators from Belgium, Croatia, South Africa, and Spain. Golden Apple, the second prize of the biennial was also given to five competitors from Argentina, the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, and Italy.

"I tried to create an atmosphere for the readers to feel that Prophet Elijah was beside them," said Mir-Aftabi about his illustrations on the book.
 
"Text and illustration are like tree and soil; they are part and parcel of children's books; a good work with good illustration never dies," he said.

"There are many talented illustrators in Iran and the world will witness more works of our illustrators' glories in near future," said Mir-Aftabi cheerfully.
 
Referring to his publisher, Shabaviz Publications, he added, "Creativity and consciousness on the part of publisher are of great importance for international achievements."

Mir-Aftabi has already illustrated the books "Must Think of Angel," "Small Tale of the World Biggest Apple," and "The World Treaty of Children's Rights."
