World leaders offer condolences to quake victims in Iran, Iraq

TEHRAN, Nov. 13 (MNA) – After a deadly earthquake hit Iranian western provinces and some areas in Iraq, a host of foreign officials have forwarded messages extending sympathies to the victims of the disaster.

Hours after Sunday night earthquake in western Iran, eastern Iraq, and southern Turkey, which pounded its heavier casualties in Iranian northwestern provinces, officials from around the world sent message of condolences, offering help and sympathies to the victims.

Erdoğan, holding a press conference at Istanbul Atatürk Airport on Monday before his flight to Russia, touched upon the Sunday earthquake in Iran and Iraq.

Regarding the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit northern Iraq and the west of Iran on late Sunday, President Erdoğan offered his condolences to the victims. He pointed out that Turkey dispatched its relevant aid agencies right after the quake.

“I wish a speedy recovery to the people of Iraq and Iran after an earthquake that happened in northern Iraq yesterday night, [and] I offer my condolences,” said Erdogan ahead of his departure to the Russian city of Sochi where he is to hold talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

In addition to President Erdogan, a host of world leaders from around the world have sent messages of similar content among them, President Assad of Syria, President Vladimir Putin of Russia, Prime minister Narendra Damodardas Modi of India, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Chief Executive of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah, President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan, Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Emir Sabah Al-Sabah of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf the Crown Prince of Kuwait, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and his Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Gary Lewis UN Representative in Tehran, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, Federica Mogherini of EU, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni of Italy, FM Sebastian Kurz of Austria, FM Jean-Yves Le Drian of France, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson of UK, and Ambassadors of Germany, Russia, and France to Tehran.

Iranian First Vice-President Eshagh Jahangiri said on Monday that President Rouhani will soon travel to the quake-hit areas.
