Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, will arrive in Tehran on Wednesday to hold bilateral meetings as well as to attend a strategic session.
“My trip to Iran is taking place in line with the joint strategic council meeting,” said Erdogan at a press conference on axes of his negotiations in Tehran. He later noted that the referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan will be on top of his agenda for consultation with President Rouhani and the Iranian Leader.
President of Turkey added that, following his visit, a roadmap will be outlined for further steps in Turkey. Turkey is in constant contact with countries of the region, especially with regard to the referendum on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Erdogan will be traveling to Tehran on October 04.
Meanwhile, Turkey's Chief of General Staff, Hulusi Akar, landed in Iran on Monday and was welcomed by Army Chief Maj. Gen. Bagheri. General Akar is being accompanied by a number of Turkish top military officials giving the journey great importance in many aspects. Bilateral talks between Iranian and Turkish military officials have revolved around various issues like study of dimensions and areas of defense and military cooperation between the two countries, as well as discussions on the most important issues in the region. The issue of referendum on the Iraqi Kurdistan has been yet another axis of these talks.
“Today political, economic, and international relations between Iran and Turkey are at a good status but we have to endeavor to boost military and defense cooperation in consistency with other areas,” asserted President Hassan Rouhani of the Islamic Republic of Iran at a meeting with Turkey’s Akar on Monday, referring to growing level of cooperation between Iran and Turkey.
The Iranian top official maintained that Iran and Turkey as two Muslim and deep-rooted countries of the region with a lot of commonalities, are facing a host of shared threats like terrorism, insecurity, and instability.
“To clear these threats and to move toward shared interests, relations and cooperation between Tehran and Ankara should be broadened,” highlighted Mr. Rouhani.
Fighting terrorism and preserving the geopolitical borders of the region were highlighted by President Rouhani as the two top priority of Iran and Turkey in developing bilateral ties. “Iran and Turkey, as two significant countries of the region who act like anchors of stability, will yield in better results and contribute to resolution of more regional conflicts if they stand along each other and move toward the same cause,” affirmed the Iranian president.
