The caravan of Iranian athletes at the 4th edition of Islamic Solidarity Games underway in Azerbaijan managed to increase the country’s medal count from 24 to 37 to leapfrog Uzbek and Indonesian sport delegations and gain second place.
On Tuesday, as the fourth day of the prestigious international event, male and female athletes of Iran demonstrated praiseworthy athletic skills as they clinched five gold, four silver and four bronze medals.
Golnoosh Sebghatollahi (Women's 10m Air Rifle), Pouria Norouzian (Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions) and Ayoub Mousavi (Men’s Weightlifting 94kg), Nahid Kiani (Women’s Taekwondo 54kg) and Mehdi Eshaghi (Men’s Taekwondo -54kg) added five gold trophies to Iran’s medal tally.
Silver medal winners on Tuesday were Ehsan Hadadi (Men’s Discus Throw), Javid Ehsani Shakib (Men’s Shot Put), Hossein Bagheri (Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions) as well as Alireza Ghalenaseri (Men's Para Shot Put).
Meanwhile, Javad Dalakeh (Men’s Para Shot Put), Fatemeh Maddahi (Women’s Taekwondo), Mohammad Yari (Men’s Para Shot Put) and Tayebeh Parsa (Women’s Taekwondo -57kg) stood on the third podium and won bronze medals.
The 4th edition of Islamic Solidarity Games kicked off in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 12 under the motto ‘Solidarity is Our Strength’ and will conclude on May 22, 2017.
Turkey on the top of the medal count table with 115 medals including 43 gold, 40 silvers and 32 bronzes. Azerbaijan has occupied the second position with 81 medals (41 gold, 24 silvers, 16 bronzes) while Iran ranks third with a total of 37 medals (10 gold, 12 silvers and 15 bronzes).
