The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan from May 12 to 22, 2017. The Islamic Solidarity Games is a multinational, multi-sport event held by the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF).
Iran’s convoy offered eye-catching performances on Saturday and earned two gold, two silver and four bronze medals in shooting, karate, judo and swimming categories.
Women shooters clinched first medals of the Iranian caravan as Narjes Emamgholinejad and Elaheh Ahmadi finished first and second respectively. The two trophies led Iran to the table of medals in the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games Baku 2017.
Iran’s tally of medals kept growing as six other sportsmen and women of the country succeeded in standing on the podium.
The Iranian men's national swimming team, comprising Sina Gholampour, Mehdi Ansari, Jamal Chavoushi and Neniamin Gharehhassanlou, landed third in men's 400-meter Freestyle Relay. Persian swimmers followed Turkey and Indonesia who snatched gold and silver respectively.
Moreover, Iranian male and female karate practitioners stroke four medals. Competing in the women’s -50kg kumite contests at the Baku Sports Hall, Nasrin Dousti defeated Turkish rival Serap Ozcelik in the final showdown to win the title. In the same category, Azerbaijanii karate practitioner Nurana Aliyeva and Algeria’s Imane Taleb shared bronze medals.
Amir Mehdizadeh took part in the men’s minus 60-kilogram kumite division and finished in the third place overall. Uzbekistan’s Sadriddin Saymatov and Turkish opponent Aykut Kaya settled for gold and silver.
Rozita Alipour and Taravat Khaksar collected bronze and silver medals for the Islamic Republic of Iran in the women’s kumite -61kg and -55kg weight groups.
Iran’s bronze in judo was claimed by Alireza Khojasteh who was competing in minus 66-kilogram weight division.
So far, Iran’s convoy of athletes rank fifth overall while Azerbaijan with 22 medals and Turkey with 10 medals have occupied the first and second positions.
Under the motto ‘Solidarity is Our Strength’, the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games started in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku on May 12 and will run through May 22, 2017.
