Iran atop Indoor Hockey Asia Cup

TEHRAN, Apr. 29 (MNA) – National Iranian hockey team has won the title at the seventh edition of Indoor Hockey Asia Cup in Qatar.

The title-holder thrashed Kazakhstan 10-1 in the final showdown on Friday to stand on top of the podium and win its seventh title in the history of the tournament.

Upon advancing to finals by defeating Uzbekistan 12-2, Persians had also booked a place in the Hockey Indoor World Cup 2018 which will be held in Berlin, Germany from February 7 to 11.

Iran defeated Malaysia 11-0 in its first match in Group A and then downed host Qatar 9-3. Iranians later quelled Oman 10-3 to qualify for the semifinal.

Iran is the most decorated Asian team, having won six previous editions.

Indoor Hockey Asia Cup is an international men's and women's indoor field hockey tournament governed by the Asian Hockey Federation (ASHF).

It was introduced in 2008 for men's competition and the women's competition was added a year later in 2009.

The 2017 Men's Indoor Hockey Asia Cup was the 7th edition of the Indoor Hockey Asia Cup specifically for men. It was held in Doha, Qatar from 24–28 April 2017.
