Iraq, Lebanon parl. speakers felicitate Larijani on re-election

TEHRAN, Jun. 01 (MNA) – The speaker of the Lebanese Parliament congratulated Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani on his re-election as Parliament Speaker in the new term.

Nabih Berri who is also the head of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union cabled a message on Tuesday and felicitated his Iranian counterpart. “Your re-election for the third consecutive term represents the trust of Parliament majority in your leadership in the new term, necessitating the parliamentary diplomatic activities to deal with imposed common challenges on the region.”

Parliamentary diplomacy is needed to avoid efforts seeking to marginalize the Palestinian issue, as well as to support their nation's human and natural resources, Nabih Berri noted.

Berri in his message asked for cooperation with his Iranian counterpart within international, Islamic and bilateral parliamentary framework which meets the interests of both Iran and Lebanon.

Meantime, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri also congratulated his counterpart in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

Pointing to the friendly relations between the two countries, al-Jabouri stressed the need for holding more meetings of Iran and Iraq Parliaments as well as consultations on bilateral and regional issues, including the fight against terrorism.

He ensured friendly relations between the two countries, including parliamentary relations, to further develop and expand during the current term of Iranian Parliament.

Larijani, for his part, stressed Iran’s continuing support for the government and people of Iraq, especially in the fight against Takfiri terrorists groups.

“I hope the Iraqi people and government achieve victory in the fight against terrorism in the near future and free Iraq from the ominous phenomenon,” Larijani concluded.
