After the closed door meeting at the UN’s Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday, Zarif told reporters that the American side can meet obligations in such a way that all parties especially the people of Iran reap the benefits which are rightfully theirs and overcome the obstacles before.
The closed meeting lasted a little more than two-and-a-half hours and was centered on ways in which the US could help remove the banking obstacles to allow Iran to re-engage in global trade and finance.
Zarif told reporters that the talks had mostly focused on properly implementing the nuclear agreement. Both officials said they would hold a second one-on-one meeting on Friday at the UN.
John Kerry also noted he talked on some key topics for better implementation of JCPOA with Iranian side, adding "we agreed we're both working at making sure that the nuclear agreement is implemented in exactly the way that it is meant to be and that all the parties to the deal get the benefits that they are supposed to get out of the agreement.”
Kerry and Zarif commented they did not include Syria or Saudi Arabia in their discussion on Tuesday, with Zarif noting "we were not supposed to talk about Syria, but the implementation of JCPOA."
Before coming to New York, Zarif told Iranian media that Iran’s goal wasn’t to have economic trade with the US but to ensure that the US didn’t create obstacles for Iran’s economic dealings with Europe or Asia.
Zarif arrived in New York on Monday, along with Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Majid Takht Ravanchi, and other officials to attend a UN debate on Sustainable Development Goals and also the signing ceremony of the Paris Climate Agreement.
