Iranian fencers off to S Korea to snare Olympic berth

TEHRAN, Mar. 21 (MNA) – The Iranian men's sabre team left Iran for South Korea on Monday morning to attend the 2016 SK Telecom Seoul Grand Prix on March 25-26.

The 2016 SK Telecom Seoul Grand Prix will be held at Seoul, KOREA on 25-26th March as the last qualifying phase for sabra fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The two-member Iranian men's sabra squad departed Tehran for Seoul on Monday morning to participate in the event.

Due to higher world ranking, Mojtaba Abedini and Ali Pakdaman have been put on the roster of Iran's national fencing team for the Seoul tournament.

Fencing qualification will be primarily based on the FIE Official Ranking as of April 4, 2016 as the top 14 athletes will directly find their ways to Rio Olympics.

If Abedini manages to maintain his position in competition with rivals at Seoul Grand Prix, in addition to confirming his own quota he will set the ground for Pakdaman to secure a place at Olympics as the best Asian fencer in the world ranking.
