Ghasemi books Olympic berth at Asian qualifiers

TEHRAN, Mar. 20 (MNA) – Iranian heavyweight freestyler has reached finals of the 2016 Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kazakhstan to secure a place at Rio Olympics.

In the 125kg weight category, Iranian freestyler Komeil Ghasemi struck an off draw in the first round before routing Koungjin Nam of South Korea 11-0.

Competing in the semifinals, Ghasemi performed a technical fall over China’s Zhiwei Deng in less than three minutes to book Olympic berths and reach the finals of the event where he will face the Kazakh prominent freestyler Daulet Shabanbay.

Accordingly, Iran’s freestyle squad has secured slots at Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games in all six weight categories.

Meanwhile, Iranian Olympic gold medalist Omid Norouzi got the better of Didar Amannazarov of Turkmenistan (8-0) in the Men's Greco-Roman Senior 66 kg during the first round of 2016 Asian qualifying games.

In the second round, Norouzi competed against the Chinese rival in a tough match where he obtained a 7-6 victory finding his way to the semifinals where he will meet India’s Ravinder Singh.

The 2016 Asian Qualification Tournament is underway from March 18–20 in Astana of Kazakhstan where only finalists will receive tickets to Olympic Games.
